Ocean Valour 2015 is a rowing challenge that saw four brave men crossing the North Atlantic from New York to Salcombe, UK. The aim of the challenge was to raise awareness and funds for the Brain Tumour Charity, an organization that supports individuals and families affected by brain tumours. The mission of the Brain Tumour Charity is to improve the diagnosis, care, and treatment of brain tumours, as well as to ultimately find a cure.
The team, consisting of rowers Callum Gathercole, James Plumley, Alex Simpson, and Alex Flynn, embarked on their journey from New York on May 31, 2015, in a rowing boat that measured just 24 feet. The team had no support boat, and once they left the coast of the USA, they were on their own until they reached the UK coast. The team covered over 3000 miles of open seas, and after 93 days and 20 minutes at sea, they finally made it to Salcombe.
Their journey was not without challenges. They faced rough waves, stormy weather, and sleep deprivation, but against all odds, they persevered. The team rowed in a two-hour on, two-hour off shift pattern, struggling against strong currents and bad weather. Their route saw them navigating through the Gulf Stream, a strong ocean current that can throw even the most experienced navigators off course.
Despite the difficulties, the team powered through and never lost sight of their mission: to raise awareness and funds for the Brain Tumour Charity. By the end of their rowing journey, they raised over £50,000 for the charity, a remarkable feat that will go a long way in supporting those affected by brain tumours.
